Your Own Basic Guide To Tile Roofs

Many homeowners have already learned how great tile roofs are. If you haven't had the privilege of owning a home with a tile roof yet, then you should read this brief guide on tile roofs and the advantages that come with them.

They look stylish

One of the big reasons so many people choose tile roofing is because of the visual appeal. Tile roofing looks great on most styles of homes, but there are some homes in particular that can really be improved with the addition of tile on the roof. Southwestern homes are great examples that generally look fabulous with tile roofing. If you like the idea of getting a roof that comes with the added bonus of improving the look of your home's exterior, then this is a good reason to think about tile.

Tile roofs work well in most conditions

Another thing that's great to know about tile roofs is they work well in most conditions. These include high winds, extremely hot temperatures, freezing temperatures, snow, and in most cases, hail. They are also fire-resistant and pest-resistant, two things that some roofs don't offer that can prove to be extremely problematic and potentially dangerous. Roofing tiles are also waterproof. This means you will never need to be concerned about any tiles eventually rotting, no matter how much water they are exposed to and how long they are exposed to it.

Tile comes in many types, colors, and shapes. This allows you to have the available selection you need to find the roofing materials you feel will give you what you want. Here are some of the many types of tiles you may run across when you are deciding on the right kind:

Spanish roofing tile - Spanish tiles are distinguished more by their style and shape than the actual material they are made with. They come in the shape of the letter "S" with each tile working as the over and the under. They can be made from terracotta, clay, or concrete. In hotter, brighter regions, where these roofs are most popular, the terracotta generally performs best when it comes to preventing sun fading.

Clay roofing tile - Clay tiles are considered to be the basic, traditional type of tiles. So, if you are talking to someone about anything other than clay tiles, you want to make this clear. Otherwise, they may assume you are talking about clay tiles. Clay tiles can last for more than 100 years with the proper upkeep and prompt repairs when needed.

Concrete roofing tile - Concrete tiles can offer the look of other tiles, but often for a lower price. Another thing you want to be aware of that some find surprising is concrete tiles can actually weigh less than some other types, such as clay.

Slate roofing tile - Slate roofing tiles have a similar look to them as roofing shingles They have more thickness to them which helps give the roof more texture, and they can have a great-looking sheen to them. Slate is a type of rock that handles the cold and wet weather amazingly. It also works well in warmer climates, absorbing the heat without passing it down into the home.
